Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life

Stacey Pilgrim (b. December, 1985) is Scott's 19-year-old (20 in Volume 6) younger sister. She works at the same Second Cup with Julie Powers and is also friends with Ramona. She's based on, and named after Bryan Lee O'Malley's real sister Stacey. She sometimes calls Scott her little brother, probably because she is more grown up and mature.

She has no problem interjecting her opinions and morals into Scott's life. She apparently keeps up via Wallace's texts, so they could be considered friends, though she sometimes expresses bitterness to Wallace when he constantly steals her boyfriends.

Biography[]

Stacey Pilgrim was born in Canada in December[1] four years after her brother, Scott. She worked at the Second Cup, working with Julie Powers. At some point she also befriended Ramona Flowers.

Scott asks Stacey if Second Cup have any jobs going.

In Volume 1, Stacey is introduced as Scott's younger sister who gossips about her brother's love life, courtsey of his roommate Wallace. She gleefully threatens Scott that she'll tell their mom about him dating a high schooler, but Scott dismisses. Stacey, along with her boyfriend, Jimmy, go to Club Rockit to see Sex Bob-omb play. A drunken Wallace Wells seduced Jimmy after Crash and the Boys played Last Song Kills Audience, causing a furious Stacey to break up with him. Stacey later aids Scott in defeating Matthew Patel at the club.

In Volume 2, Stacey gets to know Ramona a little bit more and they both hang out together at the mall, there, she witnesses Ramona and Knives fight over Scott. Stacey then scolds Ramona for damaging property. Later, Stacey phones Scott about Envy Adams' reconnecting with him after a year.

In Volume 3, Stacey is seen hanging out with Wallace and Michael at Lee's Palace following The Clash at Demonhead's gig, there, she brutally insults Envy Adams.

In Volume 4, Stacey is seen working at Second Cup as Scott comes in to try and get a job there to no avail.

In Volume 5, Stacey catches up with Scott after Ramona's disappearance and criticises her for leaving Scott on his own, whilst Scott believes she is talking about Ramona's cat, Gideon.

In Volume 6, Stacey attends the Chaos Theatre where she briefly argues with Scott before his fight with Gideon. Throughout the fight, Stacey tries to encourage Scott to stop, and even phones their mom to update her on the fight. After Scott and Ramona defeat Gideon, Stacey questions about what happened to them both prior and during the fight. When Scott over-dramatically explains what happened, she coolly asks Ramona where she was the past few months. After Ramona informs them all, she tells them to just call her for their wedding.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World[]

Stacey Pilgrim is played by Anna Kendrick in the movie adaption.

Stacey is very gossipy in the movie, a running gag in is that Wallace often texts her about the latest happenings in Scott's love life (once even whilst he's unconscious), causing Stacey to call immediately afterward.

Similar to the events in the graphic novels, Stacey is dating Jimmy who is then later seduced by Wallace, much to Stacey's anger.

She is quick to impose her (often blunt) opinions on Scott, such as telling him off for dating Knives. At the same time, she is shown to be close to him and even comforts him after Ramona seemingly goes back to Gideon but is later interrupted by a telephone call.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game[]

Stacey appears in the video game as a background character and a vendor in World 1. She also appears in World 6. A secret path will take you to Mobile's home and she is there (for some reason) before you meet Mobile. She also appears in the end credits as an audience to a Shatter Band concert.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off[]

In "Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life", Stacey is first seen at Club Rockit where she meets Knives for the first time with Wallace. Stacey later witnesses Matthew Patel supposedly beating Scott in the club. Thinking he has died, Stacey attends Scott's funeral with her family in "A League of Their Own".

In "Ramona Rents a Video", Stacey is seen telling off Julie for swearing in the presence of customers at Second Cup. Stacey can also be seen in Kim's flashback where she is sitting in the car as Scott bids Kim farewell as he leaves for Toronto with his family.

In "WHODIDIT", Stacey is seen gossiping about Julie and Gideon's relationship behind the counter, Julie notices Stacey doing this and questions her eavesdropping on Julie and Ramona's conversation.

Stacey is briefly seen in "2 Scott 2 Pilgrim", where she is being interviewed by a camera crew who tell her thar Scott is indeed alive, having used her relation to him in a past tense before being corrected.

In "The World Vs Scott Pilgrim", Stacey attends the opening show of Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Musical. There, she cheered at the conclusion of the show and watched on as Scott and Ramona kissed after returning from the Dream Desert where they battled Even Older Scott.

In the epilogue of the series, Stacey is seen working at Second Cup alongside Lucas Lee. There, she is again on the phone, gossiping about Lucas Lee's body and how the tips at the shop are good as a result.

Features in other media[]

Seconds[]

Stacey can be briefly seen sitting at the table Yana is serving at in the Second's restaurant where she is looking at the menu and drooling at it, in Bryan Lee O'Malley's 2015 graphic novel, Seconds.

Personality and traits[]

Stacey Pilgrim's most dominant traits is her knack for gossip and a tendency to always say what she thinks, especially toward her older brother who she keeps interjecting her opinions and morals to. She sometimes calls Scott her little brother, probably because she is more grown up and mature than he is. Despite her often rough relationship with her older brother, she still cares about him and it often seems her rougher emotions with him is a form of tough love and wants him to get his life together. At the same time, she also tries to act like a pillar of moral support with him. This was notable during the instances when Envy was brought up, with her wondering on her brother's emotional state when she's brought up.

Stacey dislikes cats and finds the way they move "unnatural".

Behind the scenes[]

Once in both the book and movie, Stacey refers to Scott as her "younger brother", despite being about four years younger than him. This was pointed out by Jimmy in Volume 1. The reason for this could refer to the fact that Stacey acts much more mature than Scott. Ironically, Stacey's actress Kendrick is older than Scott Pilgrim's actor, Michael Cera.

Compared to the other female characters in the series, Stacey is a relatively normal person, she is relatable and her sanity is difficult to question.

At one point, Stacey can be seen wearing a T-shirt with the motif of a star from the Super Mario games, which Scott also does once. At another, she is wearing a T-shirt with the Superman 'S' logo.

Bryan Lee O'Malley has stated that if he were to remove any character from Scott Pilgrim, it would be Stacey because he was uncomfortable with her resemblance to his real-life sister. He said he wished to at least have changed her name, so as to not make it all too obvious.[2]
