The Subspace Suitcase is the purse-like case Ramona carries everywhere she goes. It's circular, with a shoulder strap and a star in the middle. It bears a star like the Subspace Doorways.

Its capacity is unknown as it shares the same relative terms as the concept of Subspace, therefore it can be assumed it can carry quite a bit. Ramona uses this shoulder-bag to deliver the packages for her job and is rarely seen without it. Things that have been inside it at some point include: the package Scott orders from Amazon.ca to meet Ramona, the Large Hammer, the Titanium Baseball Bat, The Power of Love, and even Scott himself.

The concept of the Suitcase is likely based on a classic trope known as "Hammerspace", where a character from an animation or comic could pull out a large object from out of nowhere, or from a small storage place, or possibly as an homage to the Bag of Holding from Dungeons & Dragons.

History[]

Scott Pilgrim graphic novels[]

The Subspace Suitcase first appears in Volume 1 during the opening chapter, when Scott is in the Dream Desert and notices Ramona skating. When Scott orders a DVD from Amazon.ca, Ramona keeps it in the suitcase and hands it over to Scott before he asks her out on a date. She carries the suitcase as she and Scott go out on their first date together.

In Volume 3, Ramona takes scissors from the suitcase and cuts Scott's hair. When confronting Envy Adams at Lee's Palace, Ramona takes the Large Hammer out of the suitcase as she prepares to fight her.

In Volume 4, Scott enters the suitcase to escape Roxie at The Happy Avocado. He remains in the suitcase with his head poking out when Ramona confronts Roxie in Subspace.

In Volume 5, Ramona goes into the bathroom and takes eyeliner out of the suitcase. Knives charges towards her just as she is about to put on the eyeliner. The suitcase disappears with Ramona and not seen again for the rest of the book.

During the final battle in Volume 6, the suitcase returns with Ramona, when she prepares to help Scott defeat Gideon. When Ramona is struck, Scott enters the suitcase again to save her and it is destroyed when Ramona uses it to block an attack from Gideon. When the case is destroyed, it explodes causing its contents to cover Chaos Theatre, and disarming Gideon. After he was defeated, Ramona found her bag's destruction to be an excuse to get a new one.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World[]

Not much is said about the Subspace Suitcase in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Ramona is seen wearing it throughout the film, and pulls her hammer out of it once when she fights Roxie at the 4 nightclub, however, it received no further use.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game[]

The Subspace Suitcase appears in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game. It is used by Ramona in her special attack. Ramona can also take usable objects out of the suitcase at the cost of some Guts Points. She also climbs into it upon completion of a level after doing her victory dance.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off[]

The Subspace Suitcase plays a prominent role in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off where in which Ramona hides her friends and allies from any threats or things that may capture attention. It is also used, similar to the other adaptions, as a place that stores objects such as the Large Hammer.

In "Whatever", Lucas Lee hides in the Subspace Suitcase to evade the Paparazzi Ninjas.

In "2 Scott 2 Pilgrim", Scott is seen in the Subspace Suitcase owned by Future Ramona as he travels back to the past. He later hides in present Ramona's Subspace Suitcase as they arrive at the opening night of Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Musical.

In "The World Vs Scott Pilgrim", the Subspace Suitcase is used by Scott's friends to fight Even Older Scott in the Dream Desert.

Symbolism[]

Ramona's Subspace Suitcase is symbolic of the emotional baggage she carries with her at all times. When it is destroyed at the end of the series, Ramona's "baggage" is sprayed everywhere, symbolizing an emotional release as she realizes that her love for Scott is greater than the issues of her past, and her willingness to discard it to protect and be with Scott as much as he would do the same for her.
