Wallace Wells

Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life

Wallace Wells (b. July 1979)[2] is Scott Pilgrim's cool gay roommate and is one of the seven main characters in the Scott Pilgrim franchise.

Wallace acts as Scott's voice of reason, with the two meeting each other in college when Wallace asks him a question during a lecture. He and Scott now live together, sharing a double bed as they are unable to afford two separate mattresses. While living together, nearly all of the furniture in their apartment is owned by Wallace. While he jokingly shows interest in Scott on several occasions, Wallace is almost always seen to be in a relationship with many other male characters throughout the series.

Wallace is very open about his homosexuality, and almost always displays a snarky yet easy-going personality. While Wallace does often make fun of his friends, mainly Scott, he is shown to have a genuine sense of care towards them, expressed most prominently through his hatred of Envy Adams on Scott’s behalf. When his and Scott’s landlord gave them notice to move out, Wallace encouraged Scott to take his relationship with Ramona Flowers to the next level of maturity.

Later, he reveals that he has already signed a lease with his boyfriend Mobile so he is not available to be Scott's roommate any longer even if Scott can't mature.

His character is based on real-life Beguiling Manager Chris Butcher, who was Bryan Lee O'Malley's former roommate.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (film)

Wallace Wells is portrayed by Kieran Culkin, the younger brother of Macaulay Culkin. Kieran has been featured in many works such as Succession, Home Alone, The Cider House Rules, Igby Goes Down, The Dangerous Lives Of Altar Boys, The Mighty, Lymelife, and Paper Man. In the film, Wallace exhibits the uncanny ability to text information at high speed, informing Stacey about Scott Pilgrim's dating problems (Pilgrim calls him a gossipy bitch) in an instant, even while barely conscious. He also eavesdrops on Scott's phone conversations on occasion. He does not train Scott nor does he prepare Intel on his roommate's potential adversaries, but rather provides emotional support and advice from the sidelines, comforting Scott when his problems become difficult.

In the movie, his desire to throw Scott out of their apartment is more apparent and immediate, although in deleted scenes he offers to let him sleep on the floor (with blinkers and earplugs to avoid seeing Wallace with his boyfriends). Wallace seems to have an 'open' relationship with Other Scott as well as with Jimmy and another unnamed boyfriend (named Chris in the deleted scenes). When Ramona disappeared during Scott’s fight with Lucas Lee (Chris Evans) (Ramona's 2nd evil Ex) and refused to call Scott back, Knives came to see if Scott was home, leading to Wallace (attempting) to hide Scott from Knives (Scott just ended up jumping out the window).

Similarly to how Wallace acts within the comic book series, he despises Envy Adams in the film for her treatment of Scott and has forbidden the use of her name in his home. He drops his snarky and dry personality for a more kind and considerate persona after Envy calls Scott, attempting to offer genuine comfort to him.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game[]

Wallace is one of the many background characters in the game. You can also find him manning a secret shop found in World 1 that can sell you expensive items ($100 and up) which can massively boost your stats. His shop is the most useful as he sells Bionic Arms (Bionic Commando reference) which increase your power by half, and Speedy the Porcupine (Sonic the Hedgehog reference) which increases your speed by half, both items can be purchased twice. Playing the level over and over again four times is a surefire for easy bionic arms if you use the hidden Subspace routes.

Wallace was added as a playable character in the March 13, 2013, DLC pack "Wallace Wells + Online Multiplayer." As a playable character, Wallace is a simple reskin of Stephen Stills, using almost all of Stephen's attack animations with slight differences (the most notable ones being a rainbow special effect in his uppercut and him kissing the enemy he grabs instead of headbutting the enemy). Wallace even uses the same Knives striker as Stephen, in which Knives jumps upwards and diagonally throws large sais at all opponents. However, Wallace has different animations while walking, celebrating a stage clear and taunting. He is the only playable character whose ending, showing him sitting on a fancy armchair, is textless. It is a parody of the "Bad Ending" in Streets of Rage, where the hero becomes the new crime lord after beating the final boss.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off[]

Wallace's interview in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off'

Wallace pitched an idea to the film’s director in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off begins similarly to the two major previous adaptations of the Scott Pilgrim story, featuring Wallace as Scott's snarky cool gay roommate- however, as the story branches off when Scott goes missing, Wallace's life heads in new directions too.

Wallace finds himself cast as himself in Young Neil's film adaptation of Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life, due to him heckling the previous actor tasked with playing Wallace (Who would later return as one of Wallace's stunt doubles). Todd Ingram, playing Scott in the movie, and his co-star Envy Adams (playing Ramona) repeatedly ruin takes due to their frequent make-out sessions, inspiring Wallace to advise the film’s director to allow his and Todd's characters to kiss instead. This leads to Wallace and Todd having an on-set fling behind Envy's back, with the two repeatedly “running lines in Todd’s trailer”. Todd ends up gaining genuine feelings for Wallace (Todd even sports a tattoo of him), whereas Wallace declares to not believe in "sparks" between two people, considering the majority of his off relationships to be nothing more than hook-ups. This breaks Todd's heart (and his vegan edge), and the movie is scrapped due to unrelated budgetary reasons.

Wallace continues to support Ramona from the sidelines in her search for Scott Pilgrim, and attends Matthew Patel's musical adaptation of Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life, sitting among other familiar faces such as Stephen, Knives, and Kim. After the ordeal with Scott's disappearance is solved, Wallace is seen touring Paris, where he meets Mobile. The two kiss and Wallace remarks that he has felt "sparks" towards another person for the first time ever, and pursues a genuine relationship with Mobile.

In the distant future, Wallace is shown as a 39-year-old, sporting glasses and grey-white hair. He lives in a lavish house with his husband (who is implied to be Mobile), and houseguest Scott Pilgrim. When we see Wallace in the future, he and Mobile appear to be in the midst of a break from talking to each other, with Mobile staying late at work for the past few weeks; however, Wallace ends up calling his husband thanks to Scott and Old Ramona’s advice and the two seemingly work through their differences, remaining happily married. Wallace kicks out Scott at some point after this and remains on good terms with Scott's then ex-wife Ramona.

Appearance[]

Wallace Wells

Wallace as he appears in the graphic novels

Wallace is a young man of a little bit above average height (being slightly taller than Scott). He has short, slightly messy dark hair and narrow eyes. In contrast to his roommate's "slacker" look, Wallace normally appears wearing more formal clothes such as buttoned-up shirts and sweaters. Wallace wears a black coat with a scarf. whenever he's outside in cold weather,

Personality[]

Wallace is very easy going and calm, filling the role of Scott's voice of reason. However, he can get angry, and openly hates Envy Adams for breaking Scott's heart, calling her an "unbelievable bitch". He is also very cocky, often walking around his and Scott's apartment in his boxers while repeatedly declaring his "hotness". He occasionally ribs Scott by joking that he’s attracted to him - calling Scott hot and saying that he’s "totally [his] bitch forever." However he never genuinely intends to pursue a relationship with Scott.

Although he often finds Scott annoying, Wallace trusts and understands him extremely well. Knowing that, while Scott has mooched off of Wallace in the past, he’ll be able to fix things on his own without Wallace’s help, leading him to plan his future without taking care of Scott in mind.

His ability to establish relationships and make friends stands out among the rest of the characters, since he appears to have the most friends in the series (most of whom Scott "isn't allowed to meet", according to him). This is demonstrated in Volume 3 when the reader is shown that Scott and Wallace became friends when Wallace asked Scott a single question during a lecture in college, leading to Wallace showing up at Scott's house unannounced so often that he became a fixture in Scott's life and eventually one of his closest friends and roommates.

Wallace is a heavy drinker. In Volume 6, he is shown to have gotten drunk at the Chaos Theatre minutes after entering the building. He has a habit of fixing himself drinks in the middle of the day and even during work. On one occasion in Volume 4, he drinks at home with some friends before going out to dance, however Wallace gets so drunk before leaving that he falls asleep and forgets to go out altogether, with his friends leaving without him (Prompting Ramona to question if he has some form of Narcolepsy). Afterward, the first thing he does once he woke up from his drunken nap is fix himself another drink. He is very commonly shown holding a martini glass in official art and in the comic itself reflecting this personality trait.

Wallace has a habit of stealing people’s boyfriends, such as Stacey Pilgrim's boyfriend Jimmy, during the first concert in the Battle of the Bands at The Rockit, and Todd Ingram in the Animated Series, after having an on-set fling with him during the production of their film. He also disapproved of Scott dating Knives and further disapproved of him cheating on her, reminding Scott that knew what it was like to be cheated on himself, he then pressured Scott to break-up with Knives.

Abilities[]

Psychic Chi user[]

Wallace was taught the use of chi by his psychic boyfriend Mobile. After returning home from a rainy day with Scott, he demonstrates a move in which he spreads his chi all over the surface of his body and shakes the water off of him.[3]

Trivia[]

  • Born in 1979, Wallace is the oldest of the seven main characters of the series, being born eight years before Knives Chau, the youngest of the seven main characters.
  • Wallace seems to have a "thing" for guys with glasses. In Volume 1, when Knives asks him if he wants to know about someone in her class who's gay, Wallace jokingly agrees and asks if he has glasses. Later on, he was quickly attracted to Stacey's then-boyfriend, Jimmy, who also wears glasses. Additionally, his current boyfriend, Mobile, wears glasses as well.
    • It's also implied that Jimmy is not the first guy he has stolen from Stacey; after she sees them kissing, Stacey tells Wallace off and says "You're not stealing another guy from me!".
  • Wallace used to be one of the main characters in the story whilst he was Scott's roommate (in Volume 4, Wallace is the third character to be introduced in the 'Keep-Up!' section), but after Wallace kicked Scott out, his status decreased so that he just became a supporting character as he was no longer as prominent in Scott’s life (he was one of the last characters in the 'Keep-up!' section in Volume 6).
  • Wallace owns nearly everything in the apartment. Additionally, anything he buys at the store is mostly for him and him alone.
  • In a deleted scene of the movie, Scott sees Wallace naked again (after using the Extra Life) and states that Wallace was his mentor. Moments afterward Scott calls Gideon after asking Wallace to put on a robe and hand him the phone. Unfortunately, when Wallace encourages Scott to "Kick (Gideon's) ass!" his robe flies open exposing him to Scott once more, the viewer is shown Wallace’s backside. Storyboards still exist of this scene.
  • Wallace is on one side of Scott and his friends, which only includes him and Stacey. They don't know much about his other friend group and are rarely shown interacting with them, however Wallace and Ramona do form a friendship later on in the series.
  • Kieran Culkin (Wallace’s actor) estimates having eaten roughly 16 sprigs of parsley during takes of his scene with Scott (played by Michael Cera), when the two discuss Ramona’s hair (Mary Elizabeth Winstead).
  • In the comics, Wallace is shown to work at a computer with a headset (The job itself isn’t specified), however in Free Scott Pilgrim, Wallace mentions that he works at a cinema candy bar.
  • In Volume 1, the mailbox in front of Scott and Wallace's apartment lists Wallace's last name as 'Weldon'. Bryan Lee O’Malley admits that this inclusion was a mistake as Wallace’s name was Wallace P. Weldon during early draft-work on the series, and was later changed to Wallace Wells. Weldon is the name of the main campus library at Western, where Bryan Lee O'Malley went to university before dropping out of classes and working in their library system.
  • Wallace is "a little taller than Scott" – roughly 6'0'', the color edition reveals – making him average or slightly above average height for a male of his age (shown by Scott's height in comparison to other characters).[4]
  • It isn't known how Scott ended up living with Wallace, but in Volume 2, he tells Kim that it was a "really gay story".
  • In the video game, many of Wallace’s art sprites depict him holding a cocktail glass, always with his pinky finger extended.
  • In Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Wallace is shown taking a vacation in France and he meets Mobile, who jokes about Wallace's French being just as poor as his own. This might actually be in reference to Canada's bilingual status because it has both English and French as its native language. With the difference from Metropolitan-French being in its pronunciation and vocabulary. This has been historically divisive in Canada, with most provinces having English as the official language, while only Quebec and New Brunswick have French as their official language (albeit N.B. is both English and French).
  • An image of Wallace appears on the spine of the slip cover for the Chinese edition of the Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World DVD, an image of Ramona can also be seen along this spine.
  • In Volume 4 it is revealed that Broccoli is the only vegetable Wallace eats (The same list states that he buys 2 bottles of 2 liter diet coke per day)
  • Wallace is frequently seen not wearing pants, the color edition of Volume 4 reflects this
  • According to Scott, Wallace snores "like a jackhammer" and kicks a lot in his sleep
  • In Volume 3, Scott states that Wallace enjoys getting "a bazillion sushis" that he can barely afford
  • In Volume 6, its revealed that Hooters is Wallace's favorite restaurant
